The Oakland A’s won the game against the division-leading Houston Astros on Saturday, but the victory came at a cost.
Shortstop Elvis Andrus scored the winning point, but injured himself while rounding the goals.
“As he came in third place, I felt a crack in his left ankle,” said director Bob Melvin. Andrus went to radio after the game.
With the score tied at the end of the 9th, Andrus started with a single then March starling threw a double down the center-right. Andrus ran from first base at home, but as he rounded third he tripped and started limping the rest of the way until he fell to the plate. He was safe and the As’s won, but he was on the ground for a few minutes before being helped by the coach.
For what it’s worth, earlier in the game Andrus was hit with a left-footed throw and walked cautiously to the first goal. A little over a week ago, he received a blow to the left ankle and sitting the next day while feeling the effects.
“Look, we won a game, that’s good,” Melvin said this afternoon. “We could lose one of our toughest guys. I mean, it’s a tough, tough SOB. So we keep our fingers crossed that it’s not something big, but that he’s in so much pain, like I said he’s one of the toughest guys we have.
Andrus played 145 of the team’s 155 games this summer, including 140 shortstop starts. His overall stats for the season are weak on both sides of the ball, but it was hot in September, scoring 0.338 / 0.405 / 0.400 in 21 games, with 13 runs scored and just four strikeouts.
If the injury causes him to miss a moment in the final week of the season, Oakland has a few other options for the job. Super sub Josh harrison and Chad Pinder have each started four short games this year, and on the farm there are Vimael cars, who made six starts in SS during occasional passages in the majors.
Also in triple A is top prospect and Olympic silver medalist Nick allen. The defensive assistant got off to a slow start at plate in Las Vegas following his promotion there in August, but he’s been heating up lately with a nine-game hitting streak, in which he’s 14-in. 36 with four doubles and just five strikeouts. Allen isn’t on the 40-man roster, but he’ll need to be added this winter anyway to protect himself from the Rule 5 draft.
