“It’s truly amazing once in a lifetime,” says the writer-director of five Oscar nominations for “Promising Young Woman.”
Emerald Fennell made her feature film directorial debut with Promising young woman, and on Monday, she won her first Oscar nomination, becoming one of seven women to win an achievement nomination. The UK-based writer-director also picked up names for screenplay and best picture.
She jumped on the phone with THR shortly after the nominations were announced to talk a little more about the film’s five nominations (including a Best Actress nomination for star Carey Mulligan) and her plans for the sequel.
What were you doing when the appointments were announced?
I had planned to watch it, but had no idea that daylight saving time had happened in America, which meant the announcements were an hour earlier than I had known. I was actually at a Zoom meeting with someone, then my phone started ringing and my husband barged in and said, “It’s on!” So I had to leave the meeting, incredibly embarrassingly, with the words “I’m so sorry. I have to go. I think I just got nominated for an Oscar. (Laughs.) It’s really amazing once in a lifetime. In a strange way, I’m relieved that it’s sooner, even though I’m sad that I missed part one, because I didn’t. not had this hour of pure terror, to wait.
Have you heard of Carey Mulligan and other members of your cast and crew?
Yes! Everyone who worked on this movie is amazing and they all took a risk, frankly. They tried because they hoped it might be something. So today, when it happened, I feel immense gratitude and immense pride. We made the movie in 23 days – I’m so grateful to them. Carey and I were screaming, sobbing and hopping on the zoom. Fred Thoraval, the amazing editor, works overseas and he was asleep, so I called him and woke him up and said, “I’m so sorry but you should really wake up because you have been nominated for an Oscar. ” I wish I could see everyone. It’s hard not to be able to congratulate people in person.
How does it feel to be nominated in the Directing category with Chloe Zhao – the first time two women have been nominated in this category?
Chloe is so amazing and this movie is so spectacular, so to be nominated alongside her and everyone else in this category is just wonderful. But there were also so many female directors this year who made films so beautiful, brilliant, inspiring, and different. And so I feel honored to be able to meet and talk to all of these women throughout this trip.
It was your debut as a feature film director. Do you know what you want to achieve next?
I think after that I don’t know what to do! I think I just must have some sort of excruciating drug addiction and a harem of boyfriends. I don’t know what to do except go completely crazy (laughs). No, I just finished writing the following thing. I won’t tell anyone until it’s done, and I hope someone likes it and I get to do it. I miss people and work with people. So the fact that this movie made it possible, hopefully, to make another one, is so exciting.
