An emergency shelter set up in the border town of McAllen, Texas for COVID-positive migrants has increased its capacity to cope with a torrent of cases.
More than 850 infected migrants entered the facility after being released in the city, officials said.
The city said on Wednesday it was setting up temporary emergency shelters in response to a “rapidly escalating” wave of flooding of migrants across the border – warning that the influx has turned into a “crisis.”

The city said more than 7,500 COVID-positive migrants have been released in McAllen by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) since February and more than 1,500 in the past week. Migrants who test positive are urged to self-quarantine with a local charity, but centers are overwhelmed.
The border town municipal commission subsequently approved a temporary emergency shelter for the “overwhelming number of immigrants stranded at McAllen by US customs and border protection.”
Several hundred migrants were staying at the compound on Friday, which had an initial capacity of 250. Officials said they were ready to handle 650, but Mayor Javier Villalobos later told Fox Business on Friday that he there were about 850 people at the shelter.

On Thursday, Health and Social Services announced there were more than 830 apprehensions of unaccompanied children in a single day, which is significantly higher than the 30-day average.

The Biden administration has recognized the risk of the spread of COVID-19 from the influx of migrants and has kept Title 42 public health protections in place, renewing them earlier this month. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Friday that it was transporting those deported via Title 42 into the interior of Mexico, citing the Delta variant.
“As part of the United States’ mitigation efforts in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases due to the delta variant, the Department of Homeland Security has started transporting people deported under Title 42 through plane into the interior of Mexico, ”a DHS spokesperson told Fox News.
