Emily VanCamp celebrates four-year run on ‘The Resident’ as she releases – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: It was a bittersweet goodbye for Emily VanCamp on Fox’s Tuesday night episode The resident, as his character Nic Nevin succumbed to his injuries in a car accident.

But VanCamp says she made the right decision for herself and her growing family, which now includes a daughter, Iris. Yes, there was some overlap between VanCamp’s pregnancy and Nic’s, which helped the actress keep her special little secret silent until she announces the birth in September, at her own pace.

“It was very interesting, mainly because I’m so deprived of my family life,” she told Deadline exclusively about being pregnant on the show and in real life. “It allowed us to keep the pregnancy silent and have something of our own for a little while. It was beautiful in itself – finally having some privacy. The timing wasn’t exactly the same, so I wore a [prosthetic] belly on my belly. You know, after all the Marvel stuff, it was nice not having to focus on all of that stuff so much.

VanCamp has only positive memories of his work on the medical drama and would “absolutely” consider returning in the future in flashbacks. She teased, “Never say never.”

“It’s such a bittersweet moment for me. I loved doing The resident so much for the four years I was on it. A lot of times you hear about someone leaving a show because something bad happened or there was coolness. But in this case, it is exactly the opposite. There is only love and respect between all of us and this decision was not easy for anyone but it was the right one for me, personally. I am grateful to have been greeted with understanding and compassion, ”she shared.

“We started talking about [my leaving] a moment ago. I spent so many years in network television, but suddenly the priorities changed. I think there comes a time in every woman’s life – in every person’s life – where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that’s what happened while I was doing the series. By doing so many episodes in a different city and adding Covid to it, most of us haven’t been able to see our families for almost a year. It really made me feel that family is where my heart is right now. “

Nic, a nurse at the Chastain Park Memorial, was one half of the dynamic duo known as CoNic, a coat rack for the names Conrad and Nic. Conrad, played by show star and co-executive producer Matt Czuchry, wasn’t ready for a relationship when he was introduced at the show’s premiere, but the connection between him and Nic was impossible to ignore. . The duo got married last season and welcomed a daughter together, Gigi.

Czuchry was the first person VanCamp spoke to about his decision to quit the show.

“The beauty of television… We did over 70 episodes together and audiences had time to watch this relationship grow and change,” he told Deadline. “Come to think of it, I hope people feel like we gave them everything they could have wanted. Conrad was constantly there for Nic and vice versa. I hope their journey is something that has been rewarding for audiences and that we do them justice with episode three and moving forward.

He added, “I have so many great memories that I shared with Emily because we spent so much time together. She and I have such confidence and respect for each other. I think we pushed each other. We have inspired and supported each other. She wanted to focus on her family, and I was the first person she spoke to about it. I just wanted her to be happy. It has been incredibly rewarding to have a partnership with her.

VanCamp was not with his cast mates for the filming of episode three due to “circumstances which turned out to be difficult”, sharing that it had all been done using “the magic of the movie”. Due to the script for the episode, VanCamp has yet to screen it. Instead, she celebrates the life of a character who died as she lived, helping others.

“Nic has had a very good life. And as tragic as it turns out, her ending is very appropriate and representative of who she was,” she said. “I’m glad they followed suit. this way with the character, she leaves quite a legacy. She left a major imprint on my heart. I loved playing Nic and I’m grateful for everything she taught me.

With that ending, a new beginning is shaping up for Conrad as a single father mourning the loss of his true love. What can fans expect on this front to move forward?

“Episode four picks up right after it’s all over and we see how Conrad puts his pain to find out why the accident happened. He wants answers that make sense,” Czuchry teases. compulsively crash site that’s where he puts his pain. The loss has been so sudden and traumatic and he’s trying to figure out why she died. “

“I hope we stay true to what would be organic about losing the love of your life in such a shocking way,” he adds. “I hope after watching this episode people know we haven’t done anything. It’s heavy and dark and it’s beautiful at the same time. What we were all pushing collectively for production was to create something authentic and honest. When we get to that last bit of episodes, hopefully we’ll see the struggle within Conrad trying to make sense of it all.

Hopefully Conrad will count on the support of his stepfather Kyle (Corbin Bernsen) to move forward. In a moving scene, Conrad has to pull himself together as he tells Kyle that he can’t save his daughter. Nic’s sister Jessie passed away in Season 3.

“I feel so bad for Kyle, he went through the wringer,” VanCamp shared. “Some of my favorite scenes were with Corbin, he was like a father to me on set and I love him.”

VanCamp knows fans are sad to say goodbye but she asks them to keep supporting The resident, airs Tuesday evenings on Fox.

“Please watch. It’s such a wonderful show with rich characters, and it’s always going to be wonderful without Nic,” she said. “It’s always hard to say goodbye to a character. remember growing up and watching different shows religiously and when a character left that you felt connected with, it’s hard at first, but you always get past them.

As for the next step for VanCamp, she plans to spend lots of quality time with her growing family. And if Marvel comes knocking for more Sharon Carter / Agent 13, she wouldn’t say no.

“One thing I’ve learned from working with Marvel all these years is that we can never talk about anything,” she shares. “I love working for Marvel and I love Sharon, she’s so fun to play. So we’ll see.”
