Emmy viewers call on celebrities not to wear masks, social distancing at the 2021 show

The Emmys were skewered on social media as viewers noted the lack of security measures against coronaviruses, especially masks.

The 2021 awards show was one of the first to return to the typical in-person format after more than a year of delayed and adjusted ceremonies like the Oscars and Golden Globes. Few of the stars in attendance on Sunday were seen on the show wearing masks or observing social distancing guidelines.

Although host Cedric the Entertainer noted on the show that everyone in attendance had to show proof of vaccination, as well as a negative test for COVID-19, stars like Seth Rogen were shocked by the lack of requirements. He was not the only one.

After more than a year and a half of various mandates and guidelines designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, many were upset to see A-List celebrities having a celebration that apparently didn’t include any of these things. It didn’t take long for viewers to turn to Twitter to criticize the Emmys for not practicing what many of its stars had preached for about two years.

Some noted that it was difficult to see A-List celebrities without masks as their children were forced to wear them for hours a day in schools to avoid massive outbreaks.

“Hollywood stars are currently sitting together without a mask in a packed house at the Emmys… meanwhile, my fully immunized kids are forced to wear masks all day at school. What a ridiculous world we live in!” a user wrote.

“Require kids in school to wear masks, but no Emmy masks?!?” questioned another.

Others simply called out the stars for their blatant disregard for the ongoing pandemic.

“Are the #Emmys claiming the pandemic is over? No security protocol in sight. Masks, distancing? How many people are in this room?” a spectator wrote.

“Seth Rogen started off the Emmys by addressing the elephant in the room that no one socially distances or wears masks and that everyone is basically stuck in a giant tent,” another added.

“You know, masks weren’t mandatory at the Emmys tonight based on how many girls wore red lipstick,” someone else added.

“No masks are worn INSIDE the Emmys. Don’t call me shocked, love to preach but don’t practice what they preach…” another user wrote.

“Is ‘science’ the reason celebrities don’t need face masks at the Emmys but all hourly workers do?” someone else wrote.

“Hollywood thought they would get away with not wearing masks because no one is watching the #Emmys”, another user wrote.

“Why does only ‘help’ have to wear masks at Emmy’s? First it was the Met Gala. And now this. Looks like Covid-19 gives you a pass if you wear a tie black or a designer dress. Or maybe it’s just a rule for one band… and one for another “, another concluded.
