The Television Academy of Arts and Sciences announced on Friday that its board of directors, as part of its annual review of the Emmys rules, has changed several eligibility requirements and revised or added a number of top categories level.
When the campaign for the 2021 Emmys kicks off shortly, things are going to be significantly different from what they were in preparation for the 2020 Emmys.

The most notable development, in a year when most films are shown on television due to theatrical closures, is that any non-documentary film uploaded to the streaming site of the Film Academy – in other words, any non-documentary film that seeks Oscar recognition – will be disqualified from the Emmy competition. It means that something like Doggy style, Apple TV +, will not be Emmy-eligible, but Hamilton, from Disney +, will be.
Here is TV Academy’s specific wording on it: “To clarify the distinction between motion pictures and television films during the current pandemic, any non-documentary film placed on the AMPAS viewing platform for Oscar consideration will be considered. as a motion picture film and therefore not eligible for the Emmy Competition. In addition, the previously announced rule will apply: As of 2021, all programs that have been nominated for an Oscar are no longer eligible to enter the Primetime Emmy Awards. . “
In other important news, the categories of Variety Talk Series (which includes all late-night shows) and Variety Sketch Series are merged into one Variety Series. Both of these categories came into being after the Variety Series category was split in 2015, so it’s actually a throwback to the way things were before.
In addition, anthology series have finally found their place. In recent years, the resurgence of this genre of shows – in the form of Black mirror, The twilight zone and others – apparently confused the TV Academy. Networks were given the option of either participating in drama series or comedy series racing, or submitting individual installments for the best TV movie Emmy (even though not TV movies).
Now, however, Anthology Series will compete with Limited Series in a unified category called Best Limited or Anthology Series. And the individual work done on these types of shows will compete with each other – for example, best actor in a limited or anthology series.
The two categories that are awarded to short programs – short form comedy / drama series and short variety series – are merged into one category, the best short comedy, drama or variety series.
A new category is being created to recognize stunt performers (as opposed to stunt coordinators, who have been recognized for years in the stunt coordination categories): best stunt performance by an individual or team in a drama, comedy, a limited series or a movie. (Team registrations will be limited to four participants.)
“Our annual review of Emmy rules and procedures is more important than ever,” said TV Academy president and CEO Frank fencing said in a statement. “Our Awards Committee and Board of Directors undertake this annual review with a very thoughtful and analytical approach to ensure the Emmys remain relevant and in step with the continuing evolution of our industry.”

As previously confirmed on November 2, the TV Academy and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have agreed to migrate all potential children’s programming entries previously submitted to the Primetime Emmys to the Daytime Emmys. Additionally, children’s animation programs, which target an audience aged 6 to 12, will also migrate to the Daytime Emmy competition.
Since the majority of children’s program categories have historically been awarded as part of the Daytime Emmys, the ruling eliminates confusion and streamlines the submission process.
Daytime Programming, Kids’ Programming and Animation peer groups will continue to vote on excellence in children’s programming for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Day Emmys .
