A viral photo taken at a Domino’s Pizza in San Antonio, Texas, gives a glimpse of the chaos and stress facing food workers as freezing weather and power outages hit the state earlier this week .
The photo, taken by employee July DeLuna, was shared on Facebook on February 17. It has since been shared hundreds of times.
“This is what it looks like when we’ve been working our best,” DeLuna wrote in the photo caption. “This is us. Dominoes. Work hard. Serve you during this crisis.”
DeLuna, who was unable to speak to TODAY Food, noted in the caption that other restaurants and pizzerias were closed and that although the establishment was only open for a brief period, they served much more. of food than they usually would.
“We were open for four hours,” DeLuna wrote. “… And what (was) a weekend of serving food was gone during that time.”
DeLuna said in her post that she and her colleagues served “countless” meals but were frequently berated by customers.
“Countless people are yelling at us. Countless times we have tried to say ‘We’re sorry’,” she wrote. “It’s us when we ran out of food and couldn’t serve it. We didn’t even have food to serve ourselves.”
While DeLuna’s post mostly elicited positive responses, some commentators responded with the same vitriolic she was calling attention to.
“Hahahaha please. It’s a joke, isn’t it?” a Facebook user asked.
“Oh no. Four full hours! 4 hours of work must be very stressful,” added another.
But many in the comments have defended DeLuna and his colleagues.
“Although I’m not a fan of some pizzerias, I’m less of a fan of those who abuse the people who serve them, when their waiters have done so much to make it happen, take the abuse, WITH A SMILE, invite them back because they almost collapsed from exhaustion, ”one Facebook user wrote.“… Good job going above and beyond! ”
Another commentator called out those who responded negatively as not being able to “resist an opportunity to reprimand someone for their efforts”.
“We are very proud of the members of our store team who work hard to serve hot food to their local communities,” a representative from Domino’s TODAY said in an email. “It’s a very fluid situation right now in Texas and the stores are overcoming the various obstacles as best they can.”
In her post, DeLuna asked that those who eat in restaurants or other establishments remember that waiters often face their own difficulties.
“We have waived our rewards to serve you. We gave up our safety to drive here, ”she wrote. “We gave up our time to be here. We risked everything to be here to serve you. Please understand that we are working hard not because we have to, but because we want to help and care. Thank you.”
