Emperor Palpatine is definitely dead before the advent of Skywalker

We can rule out at least some fan theories before Star Wars: The rise of Skywalker, as it has been confirmed that Emperor Palpatine is (or at least was) dead following the events of Return of the jedi. One of the biggest surprises of Star Wars Celebration, which just ended in Chicago, came not only with the release of the Episode IX trailer, but also the revelation at the end of the trailer in the form of Palpatine's signature laugh. Although we still have a lot of questions, actor Ian McDiarmid confirmed that his character was dead.

It may seem painfully obvious to say a few days ago, but this trailer has changed everything. This laugh has changed everything. It is clear that Palpatine is coming back. The question of how or what remains to be seen. However, during The ghost threat Ian McDiarmid spoke about a conversation he had with George Lucas on the fate of Palpatine. Here's what he had to say about it.

"Is it …?" And even before I could finish my sentence, "Dead, yes." Well, maybe he could not … "" No, no. He's dead. "" Well, that would not be interesting if …? "Forget."

We already know that J.J. Abrams consulted George Lucas before looking at Star Wars 9, so he would have taken it into account. This raises a lot of questions. Is Palpatine resurrected? Will it become a kind of Dark Side Force ghost that we've never seen in the franchise? At the moment, there are many more questions than answers.

Fans will surely remember that Darth Vader had thrown Emperor Palpatine into a seemingly endless well by the end of the month. Return of the jedi, a fall that apparently would have killed anyone, or anything. Just to be safe, Lando and Wedge have also successfully destroyed the second death star. But the Force works in a mysterious way and this could be the path that leads to the resurrection of the evil character. Fans of the Star Wars Rebels anime series can point to the episode A world between worlds, which more or less introduced the concept of time travel in the franchise. Ian McDiarmid actually resumed his role of Palpatine in this episode.
