Peril! Fans have sent love to welcome Alex Trebek’s family since he passed away on November 8 from pancreatic cancer. On Wednesday, Jean Trebek, his wife since 1990 with whom he shared two children, took a moment to greet their support.
“My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity,” she shared on Instagram. “Your expressions really touched our hearts. Thank you so much.”
The host’s death was greeted with a wave of condolences from his loyal fans, including longtime viewers, celebrities and former contestants. The 80-year-old had chaired the trivia game for 36 years, since the revamped version of it debuted nationwide in September 1984.
Former competitor James Holzhauer, who holds the record for the Peril! player who won the most money in a single game, said he appeared alongside Trebek earlier this year to promote the show’s “Greatest of All Time Tournament”, in which Holzhauer faced Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter . As the players were on hand to answer questions, everyone knew Trebek was the one they really wanted. It was the last day Holzhauer spent with the TV star.
Trebek revealed his diagnosis in March 2019 and has made regular updates, including one in July. He then said that he “felt good” except for the fatigue caused by his chemotherapy treatment, and was anxious to get back to life. Peril! once the coronavirus pandemic is cleared.
The show returned to production the same month after a four-month hiatus, with Trebek again at the helm. He filmed until October 29 and that latest show will air on December 25.
