ROYAL OAK, Michigan. – A barricaded gunman situation in Royal Oak ended on Saturday evening when the gun suspect was shot dead by police and rushed to hospital.

Authorities said police responded to a report of a domestic conflict between a father and his adult son at a house in the 2700 block of Oliver Road at around 2 p.m. Police said the 34-year-old son year-old was intoxicated and assaulted his father, who called 911.

Neighbors said the man was a former military man and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder when he assaulted his father.

Police added he was heavily armed, wore a bulletproof vest and barricaded himself inside the Royal Oak residence.

Police said they contacted the son by phone and repeatedly tried to convince him to surrender peacefully. Police said they heard gunshots coming from inside the house and the suspect threatened to shoot police.

Police set up a perimeter and urged in the area – on Galpin and Glenview avenues and Oliver and Glenwood roads – to take shelter in place, stay away from windows and take cover in basements if possible.

Police said at around 4 p.m. the Oakland County SWAT team arrived, took over the situation and continued to negotiate with the man inside.

After about two and a half hours without contact, police said they used a SWAT robot and a drone to get through the door and search the house.

Authorities said communication was reestablished with the suspected gunman after the drone was deactivated.

“There was a lady from the police department talking to Jason, she was like, ‘Jason, get your hands up,'” neighbor Ted Boiteau said.

“This is what it looked like,” said Carol Boiteau.

“She was trying to convince him,” Ted Boiteau said. “It went on for a while and as she spoke we heard a gunshot.”

“And then everything was calm,” said Carol Boiteau.

The gunshot came from the police at 8:28 p.m.

Authorities said the suspected gunman came out of the house around 8:30 p.m., pointed a rifle at law enforcement and a member of the SWAT team shot him dead.
