Avengers Endgame - Hawkeye and Black Widow

(Welcome to Road to Endgame, where we revisit the first 22 films of the Marvel film universe and ask, "How did we get here?". In the second part of our Avengers: End of the game: where the film drops the ball, and where it hovers)

Among the persistent questions posed by Avengers: war in the infiniteThe way the Avengers took care of collecting the Infinity Stones was paramount. For the majority, Avengers: End of the gameThe answers are amusing and cathartic – Steve Rogers defends himself, while Thor and Tony Stark get closer to their parents – although a stone in particular is doomed to dilemma. Last time, Thanos sacrificed her own daughter Gamora to get the soul stone ("A soul for a soul," as the Red Skull puts it) in a movie where the villain won through commercial lives but the heroes have failed despite their many attempts to do so.

The superhero cart problem has raised his head throughout the series, especially in Avengers: the era of Ultron ("Would you like to kill millions of people to save billions of dollars?") Thor, Captain America: the first avenger and even Strange doctor Heroes chose the greatest well-being of their lives. Sometimes they did so in opposition to the senseless utilitarianism of the wicked, which sought to give an objective (and limited) value to human life, resulting in Thanos obliterating the destruction of half of the universe so that the other half can prosper.

Avengers: End of the game presents a Thanos pushed to the extreme. Having seen the result of his plan and the inability of the Avengers (and humanity) to pass from failure, he now plots to use Stones to infinity for completely annihilate life and send the universe back to zero. On the other side of the equation are heroes who have no choice but to defeat failure, who have no recourse but who must sacrifice for the common good and who do not can only succeed the impossible to restore balance.

It does not always work – but when it works, it works like a charm.

Avengers Endgame - Jeremy Renner in Hawkeye

Hawk Eye

For years, the two less powerful Avengers have been particularly interesting, as they are spies and assassins forced to fight alongside gods and monsters. Outside of Thor, "slamming" seems to hit Hawkeye and Black Widow the hardest.

Hawkeye / Clint Barton, after seeing his wife and three children disappear before him, goes away. He spends five years in a mask and a hood to kill gang members around the world, although there is no indication of what it could really do well. Barton and Romanoff desperately need goals. Barton, in particular, has the impression of having nothing to lose; during his team's time travel experiences, he intervenes when Ant-Man does not feel ready, despite the risks involved.

Barton's desperation manifests itself further along the edge of Vormir's cliff, where he and Romanoff must decide which of them must die to gain access to the Stone of the Soul. It's a logical extension of Barton's bow so far, and his fight with his best friend, Natasha Romanoff, to find out who will collapse on the ledge is a breathtaking watch (not to mention a narrative mea culpa Captain America: Civil War). In the end, Barton is forced to bear the pain of another loss, while Romanoff forces him to stay alive for his family. Upon his return to the present and after Banner uses the Infinity Stones, a call from Barton's wife will signal the return of the billions of people killed by Thanos.

Hawkeye, after keeping his family secret, after losing him anyway and after getting lost so far that he may not have lived to see them again, returns from rim and find solace. Unfortunately, the arc of Black Widow is not as sharp, despite its heartbreaking configuration.

Wonder women

Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff hangs out in disorder around the Avengers' HQ; her meals consist of hasty peanut butter sandwiches, and she barely has time to take care of her hair or change her sweatpants. When Steve Rogers' diabetic optimism knocks on the door, she sinks into her chair. It's a mess, and that's how she keeps her head out of the water.

Romanoff's self-sacrifice may, on paper, be felt as the logical result of the search for a goal. His plight five years after "the breakdown" is rooted in the loss of half of his family, and as a character who has spent many films using this family to try to find himself The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron especially), this trip does not reach a satisfactory conclusion when it flows from the top of the cliff. She still hopes to eliminate the "red in [her] big book ", and dying to reach the soul stone equates mathematically to a paid debt. But where Hawkeye is ready to give up and die is his entire journey, Romanoff's sudden and unquestioned acceptance of this result seems to be the product of a suppressed scene – especially since the battle duo places them through his visual language, as half equal of this head-to-head. Hawkeye finally finds himself again, but Black Widow does not have the same luxury, despite his sacrifice.

This result, while perfectly highlighting the story of Barton, can not help feeling anti-climax for Romanoff. In addition, it reduces the mechanisms of the stone of soul – "soul for a soul" – to a literal act, while the sacrifice of Thanos in War of Infinity leaned implicitly toward the destruction of what was left of his soul. In End of Game, two characters who have every reason to question themselves on their own well end up at this cliff, one of which (Clint Barton) has already lost all that he loves and his soul in the process. Although rather than considering this idea, the film remains pleased to recreate Gamora's death with almost identical shots. As if the same scenario was repeated once again, rather than letting the characters struggle to find a different outcome – or give Romanoff a more tangible boost for his sacrifice than Barton. Or, even compared to Tony Stark later in the film, who spent most of his time weighing his family against the greater good.

As much of a breath as End of Game Unfortunately, much of what does not work is, unfortunately, incomplete arches, female characters, or times that are not quite as good as their male counterparts. The arrival of Carol Danvers in the final battle, for example, is a bizarre and weightless beat, given her absence from the rest of the film and her lack of dramatic connection to the characters and events on the screen. Compare that however to The Falcon / Sam Wilson who announced his arrival to Steve Rogers at a similar time, and the difference is clear, since it refers to an existing relationship.

Born Neptune pawn, Nebula kills herself as Steve Rogers symbolically faces his most naive tendencies when he fights himself in 2012. Although the main difference is the literal consequence of the destruction of the past, Nebula nobody real, especially at a time when she screams that her father and perpetrator Thanos will not let her change. The current nebula does not have any adverse consequences for its time travel, as it does not affect its security in the present. So, this conclusion seems too easy on the narrative level for the scenario – a confrontation between Gamora and the two Nebulas that is just beginning – and it is particularly perverse considering the last words of Nebula of the past. The ultimate irony is that it is the current nebula and not Thanos that prevents the nebula of the past from developing.

However, where Avengers: End of the game manages to even have his empty calories feel like hearty meals. While the pace of all assembled Avengers goes nowhere in particular – the few results they have achieved in battle is lost in the midst of chaos – the mere sight of these aligned and ready for war is enough impregnated to elicit a raging reaction. .

In reality, one of these moments has the emotional weight to feel truly meaningful beyond the momentary optics (and meta-textual concerns of representation). Despite her late entry into the match and her absence almost as long as Carol Danvers, the arrival of Pepper Potts in her own armor created by Stark seems definitely deserved – both from the point of view of the series, since she played a decisive role in the defeat of the wicked. Iron Man film, and in the context of Avengers: End of the game.

Pepper knows what's at stake, and she knows why Stark must leave and save the day, because he will not find peace until he finds it. Only this time, she took part in Stark's decision, instead of all of a sudden, as was the case in The Avengers and Avengers: war in the infinite. In fact, she is What is at stake for Tony Stark, even if it finally transcends this secondary role when she and Stark fight back to back. They float in the air as the camera looks at them, turning and firing lasers at the alien hordes – as if they were part of a singular machine, and Pepper finally forced Stark to let his cocoon through.

Avengers: End of the game would always live or die on the success of his final act. And while its many faults are detrimental to what could have been a perfect finale, the resulting climax is full of catchy moments that make it one of Marvel's most successful achievements.
