Endurance athlete Fred Zalokar found dead in Yosemite National Park

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif .– A Nevada man has been found dead in Yosemite National Park after failing to return from a weekend hike, the National Park Service has said.

The body of Fred Zalokar, 61, of Reno was found and recovered on Tuesday near the summit of Mount Clark, according to a statement.

Zalokar was an accomplished endurance athlete, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

According to the park, Zalokar was on a day hike on July 17, from Happy Isles to the summit of Mount Clark at 11,522 feet, taking an off-trail route from Bunnell Point. He had planned to return to Yosemite Valley.

“This incident is still under investigation. No additional information is available. Our condolences to his family and friends, ”said the park’s statement.

On his website, Zalokar wrote that his main interests were running, climbing and traveling, and sharing these activities with his family and friends.
