An issue in the US-EAST-1 region has affected services at Amazon and businesses that use its cloud.
Just in time for the holidays, Amazon’s cloud server setup reminded us of how many devices and services depend on it by shutting down for several hours on Wednesday. At 7 a.m. ET, an AWS status page reported that the troublesome API was working fully again, while affected companies such as Roku, Flickr, and Anchor were back up and running. We don’t know exactly what caused the problem yet, but it’s still fun when a server outage prevents your doorbell from working.

Just when we all need the Internet more than ever.
After Comcast reveals that its 1.2TB data limits will be rolled out nationwide, it will double the pain by raising the prices of certain fees and plans. The exact changes may vary depending on where you are, but as Ars Technica points out, the changes shown are in addition to an annual increase of $ 78 for charges that are not even part of the rates advertised by the cable company.

High frame rate or high resolution? You choose.
Even on next-gen consoles, gamers can’t always achieve maximum quality graphics at the highest possible frame rates, so developers frequently choose to trade off between a switch between “performance mode” and “Quality mode”. Spider-Man: Miles Morales offered a choice of 30 FPS with ray tracing and smooth 60 FPS gameplay without, while Dirt 5 and Call of Duty have high frame rate options.
Now, new updates bring choice to other games. An update rolled out around 7:00 a.m.ET for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla allows players on PS5 and Xbox Series X to choose between a 30 FPS mode which tries to maintain the highest level of resolution and graphics effects, or a 60 FPS performance mode which will lower resolution and other effects to the fly to try to make things run smoothly. The fix is also believed to increase overall performance on Xbox systems, which had shown weaknesses in reviews like this one from Digital Foundry.
Meanwhile, a patch for Star Wars Squadrons is already online. While it brings enhanced lighting and effects to the PS5, on Xbox Series X it allows 4K resolution and the option for 120 FPS mode. One more thing to think about when making your choices for a console upgrade.
