Epic Games will be shutting down the Houseparty group video chat app, the company said Thursday. The Houseparty app will be removed from app stores “immediately,” according to Epic, although people who already own the app can use it until the service is completely shut down in October. Integration of Houseparty with Fortnite will also continue to operate until Houseparty closes in October.
Houseparty, which was released by the makers of the popular Meerkat live streaming app in 2016, was purchased by Epic in 2019, and Epic says “tens of millions of people” have used the app. Going forward, however, “the team behind Houseparty is working to create new ways to have meaningful and authentic metaverse-wide social interactions across the Epic Games family,” said Epic.
This seems to indicate that Epic has more social features in the works for games like Fortnite and Rocket league which the Houseparty team will contribute to, which could be an important tool for gamers to continue playing the ever-changing games. But for those who have used Houseparty to chat with friends and family, the impending shutdown means they’ll have to move those conversations to another messaging app.
