Epic Games veteran-led video game startup rises in Raleigh

RALEIGH – Running in stealth mode, a Raleigh-based video game startup run by former Epic Games staff has landed $ 5 million in cash, a renowned investor and accomplished artist is going into business.

The name is LightForge and the team enjoys great credibility in the video game industry.

In a securities filing, LightForge revealed it raised $ 5 million in equity from 10 investors.

Matt Schembari, former UI director for Epic and a megahit Fortnite veteran, is the CEO. He signed the deposit.

“So we’re not ready to announce our studio just yet, but I can confirm that we are indeed a video game-focused studio,” Schembari, who left Epic earlier this year, told WRAL TechWire.

“We’re gently targeting a January announcement, and we’re happy to share more details about who we are and what we’re doing as that date approaches.”

Although the investors were not identified in the file, one of those who signed the form is Sam Englebardt, managing partner of Galaxy Interactive in New York.

And Glenn Rane, who has a full CV in video game art, signed on as an executive and promoter.

His curriculum vitae includes work on:

  • Marine StarCraft II.
  • Zealot StarCraft II.
  • Jim Raynor StarCraft II.
  • Arcturus Mengsk StarCraft II.
  • Zeratul StarCraft II.
  • Tassadar StarCraft II

Other former Epic employees involved include:

  • Nathan Fairbanks, a senior producer
  • Dan Hertzka, Senior Programmer
