Eric Clapton and Van Morrison are fed up with what the UK coronavirus lockdown is doing to their fellow musicians – and they’re fighting back.
The rockers, both 75, recorded a single to raise funds for the Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, which Morrison launched in March when the UK first locked down.
Clapton performs the track, titled “Stand and Deliver,” which is scheduled for release on Friday; Morrison was the songwriter.
“It’s heartbreaking to see so many talented musicians lacking meaningful support from the government,” Morrison told Variety, “but we want to reassure them that we are working hard every day to push for the return of live music. and to save our industry. “
The “Brown Eyed Girl” singer has criticized the restrictions from the start, tweeting about the pandemic almost daily. This fall, he dropped three anti-lockdown anthems: “Born To Be Free”, “As I Walked Out” and “No More Lockdown”.
Clapton is entirely behind Morrison’s campaign, Variety reported.
“Many of us support Van and his efforts to save live music; he’s an inspiration, ”Clapton said. “We have to stand up and be counted because we have to find a way out of this mess. The alternative is not worth thinking about. Live music might never recover. “
The British emerged from a month-long lockdown on Wednesday, returning to a tiered system of restrictions that last at least until December. The UK death toll so far stands at over 57,000 people.
