Guitar legend Eric Clapton, who has campaigned against coronavirus vaccines, is funding an anti-vaccine rock band that claims to advocate “medical choice.”
The veteran musician has donated around $ 1,300 and the use of his touring van to UK band Jam for Freedom, whose lyrics include: “You can stick your poison shot in your ass.” Clapton also paid an undisclosed sum so the group could purchase a new pickup truck, Rolling Stone reported on Sunday.
Clapton, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member who has taken prominent positions in spreading skepticism about coronavirus vaccination and safety protocols, appeared with his cash donation on Jam’s GoFundMe page for Freedom last spring. The group plays free public concerts.
Jam for Freedom founder Cambel McLaughlin initially thought Clapton’s entry was a joke, but told Rolling Stone he received a text from Slowhand himself.
“It was something complimentary, like ‘Hey, it’s Eric, you’re doing a good job,'” McLaughlin told the magazine.
The two eventually connected by phone, and Clapton offered his touring van and an undisclosed sum of money so the group could purchase new wheels. He also said he could sit down with the group at some point.
Clapton made the news in July saying he would not perform in places where vaccines are required. He called the mandate discriminatory, challenging British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s order that concert venues and nightclubs require proof of vaccination. He later appeared to create an anti-vaccine song.
Clapton received two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but said he suffered from “catastrophic” side effects for weeks.
He recently appeared to be breaking his vow to cancel shows requiring vaccination. He performed in front of a crowd in New Orleans where at least one shot or negative COVID test was required.
