Nic dowd may receive a call from the Department of Player Safety in the near future.
At the end of the third period of the Capitals’ season opener against the Sabers, Dowd skated sideways through the neutral zone to give body control to Eric Staal.
The idea was there, but the execution was interrupted.

As Dowd searches for Staal’s shoulder, the Capitals’ center back appears to come into contact with Staal’s head. The veteran center would leave the game and not return.

Dowd was only given a two-minute minor for an illegal head check.
After the game, Sabers head coach Ralph Krueger announced that Staal was on the go. He thought Dowd’s coup deserved more than a minor penalty.
Ralph Krueger has stated that Eric Staal is hand to mouth and will be reviewed tomorrow. It is day to day right now. He thought the strike deserved more than a two-minute penalty. #Sabers
