Investigation into allegations of match-fixing in North America Counter strike scene now involves the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. This development comes from Ian T. Smith, the Integrity Commissioner of the Esports Integrity Commission.
In an interview with CS: GO Criticizing the smash32 demo, Smith confirmed the FBI’s involvement and said the bureau had only recently started operating a “sports betting unit.” Smith said the unit is “good, but inexperienced”.
He described the North American match-fixing scandal as “much more serious” than that of Australia, which saw several players receive lengthy bans in January. This is because the players would have been “bribed by outside betting syndicates” rather than the players themselves opportunistically doing it.
Smith said the investigation will focus on two groups: one with players fixing the matches themselves, similar to Australian players, and a group more seriously involved in betting unions. The first group should be easily dealt with in the next 10-14 days because, according to Smith, ESIC “deals with idiots.”
The survey specifically targets North American players who have played in the Mountain Dew League, a branch of the ESEA. These investigations have been ongoing since September 2020. Coverage of this investigation initially appeared to have stalled, but the FBI’s involvement means other investigators have had to withhold their findings for the sake of the federal investigation.
