ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday morning that the Packers had previously offered to make quarterback Aaron Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history, and that Rodgers had turned down. As of Tuesday evening, several ESPN analysts had somehow questioned the report.
ESPN’s Sarah Spain made it clear (as we did) that there is nothing new about this supposed news. “We heard about the Packers giving Rodgers a 2-year extension that would make him the highest-paid man in [football] months agoSpain tweeted.
ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser later broke the #Scooptown cardinal rule. During Forgive the interruption, Kornheiser has openly speculated on Schefter’s source.
“I think it’s leaked by the Green Bay Packers,” Kornheiser said. “I think what they’re doing is targeting their fans and saying, ‘Look, we tried to give him more money, we tried to give him more years, we did everything that we could and he spat in our faces. I think this is how they will try to make it run.
Kornheiser is right. But, frankly, Schefter could play both sides of it, in the name of keeping an open pipeline with the Packers and Camp Rodgers. Today’s new old news leak, broadcast by Schefter, helps the Packers describe Rodgers as unreasonable, just six days before Lambeau Field’s annual meeting of shareholders. Adding that Rodgers’ denial means he is no money (if it certainly isn’t), Schefter also throws a bone at the player, likely making sure he won’t be upset with his handling of the situation.
Yet, as explained earlier, the dollars offered to Rodgers mean nothing. The structure does. And no one has disclosed whether the Packers have offered Rodgers anything that will ensure he makes the squad beyond 2021.
Which means they didn’t.
