Is it too early to call it Tank-gate?
It’s been more than 12 hours since the Washington football team clinched the NFC East Division title with a 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The problem is, the Eagles had 10 inactive starters for the game. To make matters worse, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson retired starting quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second half, benching him for substitute Nate Sudfeld, who had never thrown a pass in a game. regular season of the NFL.
On the surface, it looked like the Eagles were tanking the game. And that’s where the problem lies, because if the Eagles had won the game, the New York Giants would have clinched the division title.
In media interviews on Monday, Pederson stuck to his story that Sudfeld gave the Eagles their best shot at winning. ESPN reporter Sal Paolantonio, who has covered the Eagles for years, hasn’t bought off Pederson’s excuse and wants the NFL to do something about the mess, based on what he has said Monday. The Dan Patrick Show.
Paolantonio: “If I’m the NFL, if I’m Roger Goodell, I’m putting on my Kenesaw Mountain Landis pants right now and doing a forensic investigation into what happened.
Patrick: “Are you serious?”
Paolantonio: “Totally. Two thousand percent. “
For those of you unfamiliar with Kenesaw Mountain Landis, he served as Major League Baseball commissioner for the Chicago Black Sox scandal and banned eight players for life after starting the 1919 World Series.
Despite Paolantonio’s call (“I think it’s worth the league’s time to find out what happened”), there’s a very good chance the NFL won’t do anything. By Tom Pelissero of NFL Network:
The NFL’s long-standing position has been that it’s only the club’s decision about who to play, for a long time, etc. So even though the circumstances (Sunday) are unique, the #Eagles aren’t the first team to play substitutes in Week 17, and the league has historically not been involved.
