Six other banks were robbed yesterday in Wollega, in the region of Ethiopia West-Oromo. And this brings to seventeen the number of banks stripped in the region in just two days, according to a report by the Amharic Service of Deutsche Welle (DW).

Tamene Hailu, head of the Qellem Wollega administrative district, told DW Amharic that six private and public banks have been ransacked yesterday for 11 hours at Hawa Gelan, Erob Gebeya, Mechara and Sedi Chinka in the area.

He added that armed men had taken an indefinite amount of money and feared that bank employees would be kidnapped.

The amount of money is not known because employees who are informed are held hostage by armed groups.

The branches of Oromia United Bank and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia have been the target of acts of armed robbery perpetrated by groups having a political connection with the militant faction OLF.

In addition to robbery, gunmen and thieves themselves claimed this week to be fighters of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), have destroyed two government offices, according to Tamene Hailu, quoted by DW Amharic.

The government has deployed defense forces in the region with the aim of restoring order in the region.

The Ethiopian Air Force launched an air strike yesterday in the area, apparently targeting rebel-held military training facilities.

Tamene Hailu confirmed to DW Amharic that the defense force had used a helicopter-badisted attack on the group.

The militant faction of the Oromo Liberation Front, led by Dawud Ibsa, which has its office in the capital Addis Ababa, has exchanged allegations with the government over alleged breach of the signing of the agreement signed in Asmara.

The Ethiopian government insisted that the opposition group should peacefully disarm and operate in the country, just like the other opposition groups.

Today, some Ethiopians are demanding the arrest of the militant faction leader based in Addis Ababa. He also travels frequently to the area his forces "control".
