Moscow police said Tuesday they detained a person who had vandalized a statue of a prominent Soviet football player outside Spartak Stadium, where England was playing against Colombia during a round of 16 matches. The word "England" was painted in red on the chest of a statue of Fyodor Cherenkov, former Soviet national team player and midfielder of Spartak Moscow, who died in 2014, according to images appeared on social networks during the match.
The police stated in a statement that they had "identified and detained" the person who had vandalized the statue, located near the main entrance of the stadium.

The police statement did not reveal the identity of the vandal nor did he say whether he was a British national.
A Reuters photographer at the scene shortly after the incident said: The inscription had been cleared.
The British Embbady in Moscow could not be immediately contacted for a comment. The British Foreign Office said that he was studying the case.
England beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties and will face Sweden in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Samara.
