Zak Brown has not ruled out that Stoffel Vandoorne will return to Formula 1 in the coming years, saying he would not be "surprised" if that happened.
Vandoorne completed her Formula 1 career in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, finishing 14th in the Grand Prix.
It was yet another weekend where the 26-year-old was overqualified by Fernando Alonso and was also beaten by his teammate on race day.
Vandoorne is now in Formula E where he will race for the HWA Racelab team, affiliated with Mercedes.
However, he will not be completely out of Formula 1 as the Belgian rider has signed up as a Mercedes simulator driver.
Brown thinks that someday he might even be back on the grid.
"I think Stoffel is a great talent," McLaren's head told Reuters.
"I think he had a good chance in a very bad race car, but we gave him two solid years and we gave Fernando and himself equal equipment.
"He had a tough teammate, but sometimes things do not click and I think he'll succeed in Formula E.
"I think we could see him back in Formula One.
"I would not be surprised, it would not be the first time a pilot struggled a bit at first and then cleared up a little later.
"I think Stoffel is definitely a Formula One driver, so you can see him coming back for sure."
As for Vandoorne, he says that he does not rule out a return.
"I am linked to Mercedes, I am going to be their simulator driver who will be a new experience for me too, so I will stay in touch with Formula 1 and I will always be involved in this world," he said.
