The Ethiopian Customs Commission said it seized more than 35 smugglers' guns who tried to illegally import them into the capital, Addis Ababa.
The weapons were concealed in a car coming from Wuchale, in the region of Amhara, Ethiopia, in Addis Ababa on Wednesday night. Of the total, 33 were guns made in Turkey, the others being Makarov guns made in Russia.
In recent years, smuggling of illegal weapons has developed in Ethiopia, according to official information. Of the total, the value of illegal weapons captured would reach 25 million Birr (about $ 877,000), according to the report. Illegal weapons were seized from smugglers at Mekelle, Dire Dawa, Bahir Dar, Kaliti, Mille, Jimma, Jigjiga and Hawbada customs posts.
In order to effectively combat smuggling and facilitate the activities of legal traders, the Customs Commission has recently been restructured under the auspices of the Ministry of Revenue of Ethiopia.
