June 13, 2019 (Ezega.com) – The Tigrayan people have been under constant attack since Abiy Ahmed was elected prime minister more than a year ago, said Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, deputy chief executive of the Tiger.
In an interview that he gave to the Ethiopian Reporter, Debrestion said that "the Tigray population has developed a sense of secessionism because of a deliberate ethnic attack targeting Tigray".
The interview follows the visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Axum in Tigray earlier this week, one of only two times when the Prime Minister ventured into Tigray in addition to One year.
During the interview, Dr. Debretsion practically condemned the efforts of the central authorities to undermine Tigray. He added that the federal police had tried to intimidate his country. He also said that the central authorities and the regional government of Amhara have turned a blind eye when attempts to blockade and starve his people were carried out.
He called these acts insane and shameful. The deliberate attack of our people is driving the people of Tigray to lose confidence in the federal system or the kilil, he said.
He also said that many Tigrayans had been removed from their positions in the federal government, not because of their abilities, but because of their identity.
Speaking of former chief intelligence officer, Getachew Assefa, and his arrest warrant, he said that he was not in agreement to target some people in to stop them while ignoring others. He described the charges against Getachew Assefa as shameful. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegne should be questioned before that of Getachew Assefa, he said.
The regional government of Tigréan has been dissociating itself more and more from federal affairs for some time now. As the Tiger Liberation Front (TPLF) claims, it is unclear to what purpose this is happening and whether the inhabitants of Tigray are behind all that.
Opposition parties based in Tigray, such as Arena Tigray, explain that the TPLF, whose leader is Debretsion, is creating this false narrative to preserve itself by creating fear among the public. In return, the TPLF calls these Tigray-based opposition parties traitors and mercenaries.
A large number of Ethiopians blame the TPLF for the deplorable situation in Ethiopia today. Many complain bitterly of the ethnic divisions and tensions created by nearly three leaders of ethnic federalism and the ethnically-based coalition of political parties, who are accountable only to themselves.
For these people, the latest move by the TPLF is nothing more than a further failure in defending Ethiopia's unity, stability and identity at the critical moment.
