The streets of Eritrean capital Asmara were lined with several banners hosting Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is expected to make a historic visit to the country.
US Chief of Mission in Asmara, Natalie E. Brown, tweeted photos of several Ethiopian flags hoisted alongside Eritrean flags and banners reading "Welcome My Dear Brother Abiy Ahmed", that she wrote in English, Amharic, Tigirinya and Oromiya

Amharic is the official language from Ethiopia Tigrigna is one of the languages spoken in Eritrea. Abiy who is Oromo fluent in all four languages
Several other social media users have posted photos showing roads, crossroads and other landmarks in Asmara, embellished with Ethiopian and Eritrean flags

Eritrea and Ethiopia broke up their diplomatic relations two decades ago, although Asmara has a permanent delegation in Addis Ababa representing it to the African Union, headquartered in the Ethiopian capital.
Prior to the June visit, no Eritrean representative had participated in an official visit for talks with the Ethiopian government since at least 1998.
