The Ethiopian Parliament on Wednesday adopted a new law banning advertising for alcohol in the audiovisual media.
The new law aims to protect children and young people against the seduction of advertising on alcoholic beverages and make them dependent and unproductive. It also plans to tackle the consequences of alcohol consumption on the health of individuals and on the economy.
Reports show that most drunk drivers are among the causes of road accidents in Ethiopia, which cost about 5,000 lives and cause millions of dollars in property damage every year.
In Ethiopia, manufacturers and importers of alcohol, including beer plants, were the main sponsors of broadcasting programs. In order to minimize the impact of the revenue ban on audiovisual media, which are also important for the democratization of Ethiopia, government institutions should determine how to work with broadcasters for better causes, said the Ethiopian Minister of Health, Dr. Amir.
"… But as Minister of Health and my mandate, no matter the consequences, I support efforts to protect the health of the public," he told Sheger FM this morning.
The bill suggested primarily the transmission of alcohol ads after the children's sleep – after 9 pm Meanwhile, during subsequent discussions and public hearings, it is decided to ban advertisements for alcohol. Finally, the 547-member parliament banned advertisements in the broadcast media with more than 400 votes.
The new law, which aims to protect the health of the public, also includes articles on tobacco and drug use, among others.
There are currently two wineries and several breweries, while dozens of companies are involved in importing and distributing alcohol.
