Dire Dawa – According to the Ministry of Revenue, tax evasion and smuggling have dampened the growth of trade and legal competition.
An advisory forum on the effects of smuggling is underway at Dire Dawa.
The Minister of Revenue, Adanech Abebie, said at the opening of the forum that the establishment of an integrated system was essential to fight against smuggling that contributes to slowing the country's economic growth.
In addition, smuggling "not only prevents the collection of billions of Birr that could have been used for development, but also has an impact on domestic and foreign trade and investment," said the minister.
Adanech pointed out that the country's foreign currency had also declined due to tax evasion and smuggling.
In addition, the Minister said that in addition to its economic impact, smuggling endangered peace and security, which resulted in the death and displacement of many people.
"An integrated system is needed to prevent and control smuggling that hampers the growth and peace of the country," she said.
Stakeholders from neighboring states in the Eastern Region participate in the Consultative Forum.
