The sixth Extraordinary meeting The Ethiopian Parliament approved the appointment of 123 judges to the Federal Courts of First Instance and the Federal High Court.

The Federal High Court has 49 judges, while the federal courts of first instance have 74 judges. 8 new high court appointees are women and 16 court appointees are women.

The independence of the Ethiopian judicial system has long been disputed as many Ethiopians tend to see the courts as rather a kind of "legal tool". Courts have also been criticized for corruption, being part of human rights abuses and service delivery problems. The reform measures in the sector, initiated by the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, are designed to meet these challenges.

The Ethiopian parliament has also appointed a mediator. Dr. Endale Haile is the Chief Ombudsman. Three regional ombudsmen are also appointed today.

Similarly, Parliament appointed Meseret Mamo as Commissioner to the Committee on Women's and Children's Affairs. Ato Ahmed Hussein will be responsible for the Semera office (Afar region), Ato James Deng will be responsible for the Gambella office and Ato Fekadu Tadesse will be responsible for the Assosa office (Benshangul Gumuz region)
