Drug manufacturers are recalling several drugs containing the valsartan ingredient, according to a Health Canada press release on Tuesday.

The recalled medications are used to treat patients with high blood pressure to prevent heart attacks and strokes. for patients who have had heart failure or a recent heart attack.

An impurity, N-nitrosodimethlamine, was found in valsartan used in these drugs, provided by a Chinese company, Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals. This substance is a potential carcinogen that could cause cancer in the long term. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to high levels of NDMA can also cause liver damage.

The European Medicines Agency also reviews medicines and recalls for these drugs in Europe
