According to a study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly one million people in southern Ethiopia were forced to flee their homes since April because of intercommunal violence in the areas of Gedeo and West Guji.

IOM reports that most IDPs in both areas live in local communities, while others are housed in ad hoc collective centers, such as schools, abandoned or unfinished buildings. IOM spokesperson Joel Millman calls the conditions of the abyss.
