New mayor appointed in Addis Ababa provokes controversy

The City Council of Addis Ababa has appointed Takele Uma as the new mayor of Addis Ababa to replace the outgoing Driba Kuma. The council convened a special meeting to make the appointment.

Outgoing and outgoing mayors are both from the People's Democratic People's Organization (OPDO) and the issue appears to have divided the politicized Ethiopians who are active in social media. And the opponent to his nomination claims that the new mayor is known for his radical ethno-nationalism and that he has expressed ethnic claims, Oromo, on Addis Ababa.

His appointment also appears to have also involved a violation of City Council regulations. According to the regulation, an individual who is not a council member can not be mayor of the city. What the council did to circumvent the settlement is to appoint Takele Uma as deputy mayor while he has the power of the mayor and will execute all the portfolios of the mayor.

One of the major problems of the system is that, unlike the practice in many democracies, the people of Addis Ababa do not vote to elect their mayor directly.

The new mayor shared his feeling yesterday regarding his new appointment:

The board also named Dagmawit Moges and Dr. Solomon Kidane as deputy mayors.
