Plans to make bamboo bicycles fly from Oxford to East Africa.

The Ecobikes project set up by Ethiopia Wondimu will use bamboo to make bicycles for commuters in hard-to-reach areas of the country that bears his name.

The entrepreneur first saw the bikes manufactured by Oxford Brookes academics in a YouTube video in 2011.

Prototypes were then built and yesterday the Oxford Brookes team officially handed over their drawings for them to bring back to Ethiopia.

"It's an incredible adventure to bring bamboo bikes to Ethiopia, especially as Ethiopia has about a million hectares of untapped bamboos."
