Ethiopia is led by the Ethiopian Revolutionary People's Revolutionary Front (EPRDF), a coalition of four regional parties, for more than a quarter of a century.

The country allows for a multi-party system, but in name only, because all parliamentary seats are currently held by the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, which has maintained tight control in the country of 100 million people since its arrival at the power in 1991.

Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister in April and is currently the leader of one of the four regional parties, the OPDO.

Abiy was meeting with national and regional parties on Sunday and his chief of staff, Fitsum Arega, said in a tweet:

Abiy Abiy concluded: Given our current policies, there is no such thing Alternative to pursuing a multi-party democracy supported by strong institutions that respect human rights and the rule of law.
