A record number of people in the East are becoming organ donors.

New figures from the NHS Blood and Transplant show that 194 people in this region, who died last year, allowed the use of their organs.

In the last decade, there has been a 218% increase in the number of organ donors here.

For years, Gemma Sturge of King's Lynn was hospitalized and suffered from kidney failure. At age 18, she was told that she needed a kidney transplant to stay alive

. She says that she may have to wait five years for even the possibility of a transplant.

Thirteen months after Gemma joined the registry, she received the phone call that saved her life to tell her that there was a match.

East of England people on the transplant waiting list. Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "We are incredibly grateful to all families in East England who have chosen to say "yes" to donating organs

"Organ donation is the only hope for many seriously ill people. We know that many families feel a sense of pride and comfort because of their decision to save lives through organ donation. We want more people to have this opportunity. "
