Sarah Walsh, managing director of Football Federation Australia for the Australian Football Federation, said the move was an attempt to inspire a new generation of women footballers.

"You can not be what you can not see," said Walsh. "For a long time, boys grew up watching their heroes on TV and I think this year's change will be a particularly memorable moment for young girls.

"It may seem like a small gesture, but it will not only encourage more girls to pursue their sporting dreams, but will also show little boys that women have an equal place on the sports field."
