Rough Guides, publisher of travel guides, ranks Ethiopian Lalibela among the "Top 100 Places on Earth – the list of travel buckets par excellence". Rough Guides' new book unveils 100 of the most extraordinary places to visit in the world – the quintessential choice for travel, to be released Sept. 1.

Rough Guide writes: "Enigmatic and quite attractive country, Ethiopia has an endless plot. From its unique and very sociable cuisine – at the base of which injera, a spongy leavened galette, filled with spicy curry and stews and shared among friends – with its ancient language and curly Amharic writing, there is very little to know about this place and your journey will be as much better.

Ethiopia is a largely Orthodox Christian country and its festivals and religious structures are to be seen. The sunken churches of Lalibela, hand carved in the red rock underground nine hundred years ago, are an amazing feat of engineering. In January, the network of tunnels and stairways that connect the eleven churches fills with thousands of faithful dressed in white, celebrating the birth of Christ with a twelve-hour mbad. "
