  Abune-Mathias-Ethiopia July 25, 2018 – Following reconciliation talks between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the exiled synod operating abroad for nearly three decades, both parties agreed to end their animosity

After the end of the Derg regime, senior church officials left the country and founded a foreign-based synod that operated independently of the church in Ethiopia. As a result, Ethiopians in the diaspora were served by two synods. Some followed the separatist synod, others continued with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church serving the rest of the country.

A week ago, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church sent a team of three archbishops to the United States, where the two sides have been holding talks ever since.
