The mosquitoes trapped in southwestern London tested positive for West Nile virus, the first time the virus was seen this summer in the city.
The insect trap where mosquitoes were captured was located near Springbank Drive and Wharncliffe Road.
Middlebad-London Health Unit says it conducts weekly mosquito surveillance tests in 250 stagnant water sites in the area.
Last year, a Londoner was infected with West Nile virus, but it was not clear if the person had contracted the virus in the city.
The health office says that Londoners should not let their guard against mosquitoes and should ensure that stagnant water is removed from the clbadroom.
"As we continue our efforts to monitor and control mosquitoes in the area, we want to remind people in London and Middlebad County that they must protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites." said Jeremy Hogeveen. Recommendations:
- Emptying gutters and flowerpots
- Changing the water of the birds bath
- Adding a pump to the ornamental ponds
- Wearing long-sleeved shirts from light color
- insect repellent
- Avoid the open air near dawn and dusk
On Monday, a mosquito was tested positive in Woodstock. Hamilton also saw a lot of mosquitoes test positive prompting this city to raise the level of the threat from low to moderate.
