Crested Cranes of Uganda shocked Harambee Starlets with a 1-0 win in the opening match of the Cecafa Women's Championship at Kigali stadium yesterday.

Lilian Mutuuzo scored Uganda's only goal in the seventh minute thanks to a defensive foul from Kenya after a corner kick.

Ugandan captain Tracy Jones took the corner and Kenyan goalkeeper Poline Atieno put the ball in play.

The ball was taken over by Mutuuzo who made no mistake in punishing the Kenyans by six yards.

This was the first goal that Uganda scored against Kenya after three games.

Starlets almost responded immediately, but the shot of Mwanahalima Adam was well picked up by Ugandan keeper Ruth Aturo.

Kenyans miss opportunities

Adam could have equalized in the 17th minute after a brilliant race that saw him beat Aturo but she hit the amount.

Kenya continued the attacks this time with Teresa Engesha who fired a powerful long range shot from outside the deflected area.

Cythia Shilwatso also tried long distance two minutes later, but to no avail.

Adam was then set up by Engesha, but his shot went wide again.

At the half-hour mark, Kenya conceded a free kick 20 yards from goal and Norah Alupo advanced to catch him but his shot hit the crossbar.

Five minutes from the break, Engesha missed a new opportunity to tie Starlets.

At the restart, Kenya seemed to be a better camp as they showed more urgency in attack, but they failed to break the Ugandan defense with goalkeeper Aturo by denying them with brilliant stops.

Kenya will now face Tanzania tomorrow its second game of the championship.
