The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) encouraged African countries to submit bids to host the flagship event of cycling in 2025.
As announced during the UCI presidential campaign in 2017, and adopted unanimously by the Arzon Management Committee in June 2018, the UCI hopes to see Africa host its first UCI Road World Championships in 2025.
The deadline of submission is September 2019, date on which the UCI, after approval of its Management Committee, will announce the name of the city selected at its Annual Congress
An invitation letter and a document intended to help potential bidders to bid were sent to the 50 National Federations of the African Cycling Confederation (ACC).
The purpose of what will be the historic event in the history of cycling is to consolidate the growth of cycling in Africa.
In recent years, Africa has shown considerable interest in organizing major events in various disciplines, as well as the UCI Mountain Bike and Para-cycling Road World Championships, which have took place respectively in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa) in 2013 and 2017.
The road races of the UCI Africa Tour calendar, such as the Tour of Rwanda, La Tropicale Amissa Bongo and the Tour du Maroc attract a number of entries. Professional teams from around the world and give an idea of the growing visibility of the continent in the UCI international calendar.
