The retired dentist, Trevor Parsons, age 85, has a mission to open a much needed medical center in a northern Ethiopian city.
Mr. Parsons, who lives in Malvern, has already sponsored a local student for six years of nursing training and worked with him to build a medical center in the secluded town of Lalibela.
The final hurdle is to provide the center with essential equipment to support 35,000 farmers and their families in the region, where men are expected to live only 49 years and women 51 years old at a cost of £ 40,000.
Eight years ago, Trevor was visiting Lalibela to see the underground churches in the area.
He was approached by a man who showed him that a young farmer was dying of gangrene following a snake bite. Trevor paid the man to go to a medical center where his arm was amputated.
After returning to England, he stayed in touch with a young man he met in the city, Adisu, who wanted to study to become a nurse so he could take care of the inhabitants of his city.
Mr. Parsons said, "I wanted to do everything I could to support this dedicated young man. I was delighted when Adisu graduated after six years of hard work, with commendable reports.
Now, with his support, Adisu and his brother have overseen the construction of a new medical center, which is almost complete.
Adisu dreams of educating the population about vaccinations, health problems and providing essential health care.
The only way to realize this dream is for Trevor and his supporters to raise the £ 40,000 needed for the center's essential equipment.
