EU ready to investigate Apple's Spotify competition allegations

Both technology companies declined to comment on the report. However, Apple has already rejected the claims of Spotify. He argued that Spotify was really motivated by "financial incentives" and wanted to benefit from the infrastructure of the App Store without contributing to it. The company also rejected the idea that it favored Apple Music at the software level, even going so far as to say that it was talking to Spotify about AirPlay and Siri integrations.

The developers of the App Store must not only provide a 30% reduction in their subscription revenue the first year (15% second), but they can not direct their customers to an external website for subscribe to it. This lets suppliers charge a premium for subscriptions based on the App Store (as Spotify does now) or take on a large portion of their costs.

There is no certainty that an investigation will lead to what Spotify wants. A win for the company would however have a significant effect on Apple. It may need to reduce or eliminate the number of subscriptions, or to make its devices work as closely with third-party media services as with Apple's own services. Although potentially liberating for users, it could affect Apple's increasingly important revenues and force it to rely on money from its burgeoning music, news, and video offerings.
