OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (WBAY) – 10:35 p.m. UPDATE: The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh due to the extreme weather conditions heading towards Oshkosh.

The center has been set up for those who frequent and camp on the grounds of the EAA AirVenture.

As noted, the storms have produced tornado warnings and are expected to move through the area overnight.

The center is located at 1212 S. Main Street and has electricity, toilets, water and a place to weather the elements.

Earlier in the evening, EAA officials announced that anyone camping on AirVenture grounds and wishing to shelter elsewhere due to weather conditions will be able to use buses operated by AirVenture to take them to the shelter.

Buses will run continuous routes and pick up participants from Shower Buildings and Red One Markets in these areas:

  • Camp Scholler
  • North 40 aircraft campground
  • Aircraft campsite Sud 40
  • Homemade airplane camping

Officials say EAA will first use its aviation museum as a temporary shelter and then use other facilities in Oshkosh.

On Wednesday afternoon, those responsible for the event had asked anyone who did not need to be in the field to leave before 5 p.m.

the First Alert Weather Team predicts that the storms will come in several groups moving from northwest to southwest with wind gusts of 70 MPH. “One or two tornadoes cannot be ruled out,” says Brad Spakowitz. There is also a risk of heavy downpours and urban flooding before the storms recede overnight. INITIAL REPORT 4:21 PM: EAA AirVenture officials are asking anyone who does not need to be at the air show to vacate the venue by 5:00 PM due to the threat of a major storm Wednesday night.

AirVenture will close most of its operations at Wittman Regional Airport by 5, including exhibition buildings and restaurants. Evening programs, Theater in the Woods and Fly-In Theater are canceled. The night air show is rescheduled for tomorrow, July 29.

The airport will be open for departures until 8 pm “or as long as possible” and “transportation systems will continue to operate as weather conditions permit”.

The EAA reminds anyone with planes on the ground to make sure they are properly secured.

People with bracelets must hold them. Wednesday bracelets can be exchanged for Thursday entry at the gates.

An announcement from the EAA says it will provide additional information and alerts to campers as soon as it becomes necessary.

“Safety is always EAA’s top priority, and given the best forecasting information from the National Weather Service, we want to give everyone the ability to make decisions in advance,” wrote the CEO / Chairman of EAA Jack Pelton in a statement.
