The NHL has announced that it is launching a full investigation into the conduct of San Jose Sharks star Evander Kane after his wife, Anna, posted a series of Instagram posts alleging the 29-year-old was betting on her own games.

It is not known if the league will make its findings public.

Screenshot Messages from Anna Kane began circulating on social media early Saturday night, with the league’s response coming hours later. San Jose released its own statement immediately after the league’s announcement.

“The Sharks were in contact today with the [NHL] on the serious allegations against Evander Kane, “the team noted. “We are supporting a full and transparent investigation of the situation to maintain the integrity of the game and consistency with our team’s values.”

Kane’s wife alleged that her husband had a gambling addiction that forced her to sell their house and wedding ring while Kane traveled to Europe.

Anna Kane, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, called the situation a “living nightmare,” adding that she struggles to afford formula while Kane continues to make lavish trips abroad.

“How does the NHL let a compulsive gambling addict continue to gamble when he is obviously playing games with bookies to make money?” Anna Kane wrote in a post that tagged the NHL account. “Hmm, maybe someone needs to take care of this.”

Neither the NHL nor the Sharks have publicly offered support to Kane’s family while the league investigates.

In 2019, Kane was for follow-up by The Cosmopolitan hotel and casino in Las Vegas for $ 500,000, he extended the scoring winger during a previous stay. Two years later, in January 2021, Kane filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy after racking up $ 26.8 million in debt. He only held $ 10.2 million in assets after signing a seven-year, $ 49 million extension with the Sharks in 2018.

Athletes playing their own games have long been considered one of the most serious offenses in professional sports. MLB all-time hits leader Pete Rose was notoriously banned from baseball after league investigators discovered he bet on games he coached for the Cincinnati Reds in 1989 .

Despite a drop in goals per game, Kane recorded the fourth best attacking season of his 12-year career in 2020-21, scoring 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points. His plus / minus was also the third best of his career last season at minus one.

Still, the Sharks were one of the worst teams in the league, ending the pandemic-shortened season of 56 games with a 21-28-7 record. It remains to be seen how the league will go about determining whether Kane is trying to pitch games or negatively impact his team’s potential results.
