Even Google thinks it’s time to switch from Internet Explorer 11

Geriatric browser will not support the full Google experience

Internet Explorer has had a good run, but it has been trying to shake off its questionable reputation for years. Despite Microsoft’s betting efforts, using a third-party browser on your PC has become a necessity for many of us. Google ultimately ended up killing Internet Explorer in favor of Microsoft Edge, and the last version of Internet Explorer we got came out in 2013 with Windows 8.1. It’s now 2021, and it’s high time to move on, so even Google Search is dropping support for the geriatric browser.

When you access Google from Internet Explorer 11, you will no longer be able to access the full search site, according to 9to5Google. The company doesn’t completely shut down access (and thus cripple the browser), but you’ll end up with a back-up and streamlined Google experience that can do basic searches, but not much more.

Why is this happening? According to Malte Ubl, software engineer at Google, the research team carried out an internal assessment and found that supporting IE11 is simply not worth it if they are to continue to develop the web experience. Users who are too stubborn to switch to a new browser or system will get this fallback experience, so it’s not like Google kicks someone out. But that’s basically how Google tells you you need to move on.

Microsoft officially puts the final nail in the coffin of Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, when it removes the software from all consumer versions of Windows 10 (it still ships with Windows 10 as a “compatibility fix” for legacy websites, but Edge now has an “IE mode” for it).

Windows 11, the next major version of Microsoft’s operating system, will not ship with Internet Explorer by default, only shipping with Microsoft Edge. Using Internet Explorer to try to access many modern websites can also lead to a less than ideal experience, and soon it could become quite dangerous as well.

Given all of this, we have to agree with Google here: it’s about time.
