2021 includes new films from Sony’s MCU, DCEU, and Marvel Universes. Here are all of the upcoming superhero movies, such as Black Widow & Suicide Squad 2.
Here are all the superhero movies that will be released in 2021. Superhero movies have become the dominant genre of blockbuster entertainment in recent years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the greatest film franchise of all time and has seen Avengers: Endgame become the highest-grossing movie of all time in 2019. Their production increases in 2021 to include four Disney + films and six shows. The continued popularity of the MCU has led Sony to restart its efforts to create its own Marvel Shared Universe. Meanwhile, the DC Extended Universe continues to move forward with plans to release up to six films per year between theaters and on HBO Max.

With so much superhero content on the way, Hollywood studios are setting release dates for highly anticipated titles years in advance. However, that doesn’t mean that everything always goes according to plan. 2021 was at one point going to include a lot of movies that are no longer coming out this year. Matt Reeves’ The batman with Robert Pattinson has been pushed back to 2022 following significant production delays due to COVID-19. The same is true for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Dwayne johnson Black adam was also slated for a December 2021 release, but it lost that release date in late 2020.
These delays in the 2021 films were also partially made up for so that studios could find a home for the 2020 superhero films that they couldn’t release. COVID-19 closed theaters for months and forced all major Hollywood studios to overhaul their slates. But, there are also titles coming out in 2021 that most would never have thought of releasing. With all of that in mind, here are the superhero movies coming out in 2021.
Justice League by Zack Snyder
2021 will mark the long-awaited release of Justice League by Zack Snyder. Although a version of Justice League was released in theaters in 2017, the film presented to the public was a film heavily covered by Joss Whedon at the request of Warner Bros. It was announced in 2020 that Zack Snyder had the chance to complete his vision for HBO Max. It is currently expected to last four hours, of which around 75% has not been seen. No official release date for Justice League is confirmed, but it is expected to arrive in March 2021.
Morbius
The second entry into the Sony Pictures universe of Marvel characters will arrive in 2021 with Morbius. The film stars Jared Leto as Morbius the Living Vampire and is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2021. Morbius is an origin story of the anti-hero Spider-Man and was originally slated for release in 2020. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life), the film also stars Matt Smith, Jared Harris and Adria Arjona. It also features a cameo of Vulture by Michael Keaton, who previously starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Black Widow
The first film on Marvel Studios’ 2021 schedule is Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited MCU solo film is slated to hit theaters on May 7, 2021. It was supposed to launch Phase 4 in May 2020, but Marvel has delayed the film several times due to the status of the theater industry. Since Natasha Romanoff died in Avengers: Endgame, his film will be a prequel that continues its story after Captain America: Civil War. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (Kumail Nanjiani), Iron Maiden (Rachel Weisz) and Taskmaster will all be featured in Black Widow.
Samaritan
One of the original superhero movies released in 2021 is Samaritan. The film stars Sylvester Stallone and is expected to be a dark, grounded version of superheroes. The plot would follow a young boy who discovers that a superhero who has been presumed dead for 20 years is still alive. This superhero will be played by Stallone. Samaritan is directed by Julius Avery (Suzerain) and has a release date of June 4, 2021.
Venom: May the Carnage Be
The first SPUMC sequel arrives in 2021 with Venom: May the Carnage Be. The sequel to 2018 Venom brings back Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock aka Venom and will see him take on Cletus Kasady aka Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson. The film will also bring back Michelle Williams as Anne Weying. Naomie Harris is also a part of the cast and is rumored to be Shriek, another villain and Cletus lover. Venom: May the Carnage Be is directed by Andy Serkis and has a release date of June 25, 2021.
Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings
The second MCU movie released in 2021 is Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who would become the first Asian character to star in a Marvel movie. Plot details have yet to be revealed and only a few cast members are confirmed. Tony Leung is on board to play the real Mandarin after Marvel used a fake version of him to Iron man 3. The cast also includes Awkwafina, Florian Munteanu, and Michelle Yeoh – who is playing her second role in the MCU. Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and hits theaters July 9, 2021.
The suicide squad
The only DCEU film released in 2021 is that of James Gunn The suicide squad. Gunn’s vision for Task Force X has neither been described as a sequel to 2016 Suicide Squad or a restart. The R-rated film will be something of both, it seems, as it includes both familiar and new characters. Returning characters include Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Some of the new faces that appear in The suicide squad are Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena). The suicide squad hits theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
Eternal
The third Marvel Studios film in 2021 will be Eternal. The new MCU franchise follows a group of superhumans known as the Eternals who were created by the powerful cosmic entities known as the Celestials. Marvel has assembled a talented ensemble to play the relatively obscure comic book characters of Phase 4. Richard Madden and Gemma Chan star as Ikaris and Sersi. The rest of the cast includes Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie, Barry Keoghan and Kit Harington. Eternal is directed by Chloe Zhao and is released on November 5, 2021.
Spider-Man: Homecoming 3
The last superhero movie of 2021 comes from Sony and Marvel Studios. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man for Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, which does not yet have an official title. The film features the MCU return of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and it looks like it includes several other Marvel characters from previous non-MCU films. Most notably, it has been reported that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will both appear as their versions of Spider-Man. These plot details are unconfirmed, but the return of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock has been reported by reputable sources. Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 is directed by Jon Watts and has a release date of December 17, 2021,
