Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was originally released in December 2018 with a roster of 69 recognizable characters from iconic Nintendo and third-party franchises. Since its launch, the platform fighter’s cast has grown to accommodate 78 characters in total, thanks to the Fighter Pass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. But which of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Are the new DLC arrivals the best, competitively?
Currently, the Fighter Pass bundles have added eight fighters to the roster, with Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 being the most recent addition. Nintendo also added Piranha Plant as a standalone DLC character when Ultimate Smash launched, which means that once Fighter Pass Vol. 2 is finished, Ultimate Smash will include 12 DLC fighters in total.

9. Piranha Factory
Piranha Plant was the first DLC character added to Ultimate Smash but takes the place as the worst of the group. The Flower Hunter has a plethora of options for trapping opponents on the ledge, especially with their Side Special and Neutral Special which deal massive damage and cover a lot of space. All of this doesn’t end up being very impactful, as almost none of Piranha Plant’s moves combine, forcing the character to rely on stray shots to take stock. They’re very heavy, so they’ll outlive most of their opponents, but their slow speed and extremely predictable recovery almost always causes Piranha Plant to be killed early on.
8. Banjo and Kazooie
This bear and bird duo has powerful Smash attacks and an incredible Side Special that acts as both a scavenge option and a kill move. Banjo & Kazooie’s projectile attacks also allow them to push enemies from a distance, but their combo play also leaves a lot to be desired. Most of their attacks are unrelated, which means Banjo and Kazooie have to gain more interactions to get the same amount of damage most characters can take with one hit. This weakness is further compounded by their lackluster speed.
7. Byleth
Ultimate Smash Game director Masahiro Sakurai described Byleth as a “remote daemon, “which perfectly encompasses the Fire Emblem: Three Houses protagonist kit. Byleth was stronger than expected, with his wide-ranging Smash attacks and antennae that can ridiculously kill early and break shields easily, but players need to hit the sweet spot of their attacks to ensure those quick knockouts. This can be very difficult for the majority of actors due to Byleth’s slowness and the few options they have to escape the juggling.
6. Heroes
The hero of Dragon Quest XI is one of the wackiest characters to ever do Ultimate Smash because of his Down Special. This move brings up a list of four random spells on the list of 21, ranging from transforming the hero into a steel statue to potentially killing his enemies at zero percent. The sword bearer is the Smash the equivalent of playing a slot machine, as players never know what spells they will be receiving, and this makes Hero inconsistent.
His normal attacks are very slow and he must hit them to regenerate his mana in order to be able to cast his spells. If the players are lucky, Hero can easily become the best character in the game, but if they are unlucky, they can accidentally select the Kamikaze spell and self-destruct.
5. Minecraft Steve
This boxy bruiser has some of the most unique mechanics of all Ultimate Smash, which players can use to achieve incredible combos and set up almost must-have traps. Steve can extract resources using his Neutral Special in the field, then build various weapons to increase the strength of all his movements. In the air, his Neutral Special allows him to build blocks that completely invalidate certain recoveries or can bounce opponents to their doom if they are taken by surprise.
While Steve’s kit has endless potential, playing it at a high level takes a ton of work, as players have to balance managing resources, crafting tools, and mastering complex setups. This is made even more difficult by the fact that he has the lowest jump height in the game and his recovery options are rather limited, especially when he has no gear.
4. Sephiroth
the Final Fantasy 7 the villain could have been added to the Ultimate Smash most recently, but his kit is extremely promising. Not only does Sephiroth possess the longest sword in the game, but he’s also able to extend his reach far beyond any other sword fighter, thanks to his winged form.
The kickback mechanic activates when the fighter is at a disadvantage and grants them a speed boost, increased damage, super armor on all of their Smash attacks, and a triple jump. A lot Ultimate Smash advantages I agree that this puts Sephiroth in the top echelon of fighters in the game, but his light weight, large damage area, and slow attacks can knock him out before Winged Form activates.
3. Min Min
the ARMS the character has the best range Ultimate Smash, thanks to its two noodle-shaped appendages that players can control individually using Button A (left arm) and Button B (right arm). His special Down allows Min Min to cycle between three types of weapons that have different potency and range.

To top it off, once he’s taken enough damage to hit 100%, he has access to two deadly return moves – Power Geyser and Buster Wolf – which deal devastating damage and kill early on. These moves can only be used by performing a specific sequence of entries, which can make Terry more difficult to play than most fighters, but he’s deadly if overpowered.
1. Joker
Joker of Person 5 top of the list due to his signing ability, Arsene. He has a power meter that charges over time, whenever he takes damage, or when he uses his Down special to absorb damage. Once he’s full, he summons Arsene to dramatically increase the potency of his already swift attacks. This can be used as a return or snowball mechanic to get Joker back into a game if he has lost a stock or two, or to run away with a game he is already dominating.
