‘Everyone makes money’ – Mike Tyson disagrees with Floyd Mayweather on boxing belts

Mike Tyson had a triumphant comeback against Roy Jones Jr. in their exhibition fight. Although he didn’t get the win (draw), it was a great way for him to herald a return to the boxing world.

Tyson does this in several ways. He quite often comments on sport and its current state. After his draw against RJJ, Tyson spoke to the media and spoke to Floyd Mayweather, saying boxing needs to lower its belts.

He said, “Boxing never has too many belts because every time it’s a championship fight, it’s more money for the fighter. There are never enough seat belts you know? To say there is a champion and there are 10 guys, how long will it take for the champion to fight all 10 guys? Also, they have to cross … It’s good to have three champions because then everyone can get paid… Everyone makes money. This is what it is about. Silver.”

It’s hard to argue against Tyson’s logic. What makes everyone pay is what will be optimal in modern boxing. Even if you hold it against promotions like the UFC, they have one belt per weight class. But, even they’re adding “interim” championships to sell more cards than they otherwise would have.

Is Mike Tyson Right To Have More Belts In Boxing?

Regarding the commercial aspect, it definitely is. Tyson even said that YouTubers who practice boxing deserve a belt for the visibility they bring to the sport. However, a purist will always see a problem with so many world titles.

The value of each belt is technically less if there are that many champions. However, it becomes a bit obvious who is the better champion among them. If it’s not obvious, you can sell two champions who come together to unify their belts. Belts are a real commercial gold mine that will only increase the visibility of boxing.

It is not known if we see more belts in the real future. However, the new belts will spark debate whenever there is any clue about them.
